of the police state

Hmm interesting post today and well lets just say I'm expressing my comments as a free willed Singaporean so I hope the police don't come a-knocking at my door steps soon!

Fingers crossed XX

So the story begins like this..

Lets just say I know a friend who knows a friend who works in one of the leading news agency in Singapore, channel news asia (CNA). Oh so interestingly enough, they have an annual top stories feature that you can find here.

Anyway said friend told people to have a look at it. And I think you guys should look at it too cause it does put this year's news stories into perspective.

Moving on, so I did the poll and decided to helpfully comment. Well what else is a commentary box use for? And so I was talking to another friend, lets call him A, how come they didn't put the ministerial pay hike up as one of the top stories in SG? And guess what... A told me that ahem.. the people higher up probably don't allow it! It does say alot doesn't it?

But is that the end? No it isn't!

Even more interesting.. So this was the comment I posted up

"I think the top 5 stories in Singapore should include the ministerial pay hike, which was a subject of much contention and controversy in the media when revealed.

After all looking at your current poll results, the average Singaporean is more concern with monetary issues then say the big woo ha launch of the airbus, which lets be honest really, how many of us were affected by it?

So perhaps it is a monetary issue as well for one of the leading news agency in Singapore to choose to omit such an interesting and certainly headlining story from their "top" stories."

After pressing the submit button, the next page goes, "Your comments will be posted up shortly"

When I checked back later my last sentence was edited into this,

" I'd like to know what has made one of the leading news agencies in Singapore choose to omit such an interesting and certainly headlining story from their "top" stories."

Which is not as confrontational(?) as the one I wrote probably. But who am I to start a one man crusade against the authority? And by blogging this I'm not k.

But in my mind I'm
like.. "what! you can edit my comments one ar! police state can!"

And you know what, I don't blame anyone for editing the voice of the people of Singapore, he/she has to do it because its his/her job. A struggling journo is a hard job I know! Its not like its the news agency at total fault too for appearing politically correct. It is our culture.

I think it has to do with our sense of not wanting to offend, not wanting to jeopardize your own rice bowl and silencing the voice of protest. To live and let live if you will. So i rest my case.

After all we are Asian, we eat rice.

Waiting to migrate,
Travis
